Holidays in 2015: where to go and what not to miss (Part 4)

Jandía, the stronghold of the family peace

You can say that only a few places in summer are quiet and relaxed. The large invasion of tourists that the major coasts and beaches in Spain sustain makes almost impossible to find a sunny destination that is not overcrowded… Except for escaping to an island. And this island is Fuerteventura and, in particular, its extreme South: the Jandía peninsula. Even if, like in every place, you can perceive the summer, since this area offers a spectacular climate (and very similar) all year round, in the high season there are no peaks of floating population, as it happens, for example, in Majorca in July or August.

For this reason (and for many others, like its beaches, nature and windsurf), we have included Jandía in this little list of destinations for holidays in 2015. The peninsula of Jandía, with areas with family hotels such as Playa Jandía, Costa Calma or the village of Morro Jable, offers a unique landscape, beaches with less waves and with less deep sea floors than in other parts of Fuerteventura, thematic parks where to take your children, a good native gastronomic offers and wines… Basically, without moving from the peninsula. If you travel there, we recommend you the excursion to Pico de Zarza, the tallest mount in Fuerteventura, and a visit to the beach of Cofete, but be careful because it is some kind of dangerous for your kids, since this is a coastal zone with strong marine currents. As regards accommodations, there are many options to choose from. If you travel with your family, any of the 3 hotels in Playa de Jandía of the Iberostar chain largely cover your needs. In addition, one of those hotels in Jandía features a special area for adults that will allow you to enjoy as it were a holiday with your partner.

Jandia in September

Traveling to the Jandia peninsular in September is one of the best options if one wishes to enjoy all the charm of this area in the south of Fuerteventura without suffering the extreme heat and an excess of tourists, which is normal in the high season but without renouncing the great summer atmosphere in this holiday paradise.

Book a room by Jandia beach or choose a good family resort in Playa Gaviotas, it is more economical at this time at the end of the summer and the climate is still mild,  slightly windy but without causing discomfort and it is ideal for practicing sports such as surf and windsurf, the top activities on the island.  The hotels near to the beach of El Matorral and Costa Calma are amongst the best that can be found in the south of Fuerteventura and have the advantage of being very near to the delightful Morro Jable village, where concentrated are a large part of the cultural and gastronomic offer of this beautiful natural peninsular.

Forming part of the municipality of Pajara, is one of the most spectacular natural areas in Fuerteventura – until recently with the category of Jandia National Park – and it is an ideal destination for hiking and September is one of the best months, with very agreeable temperatures, the hours of sunshine continue until late in the afternoon and the routes are less populated.

During September in this area, are celebrated the “Octopus fiestas” at nearby Puertito de la Cruz, which also includes a traditional race between the lighthouses of the Punta de Jandia.  Athletes both professional and amateurs attend from all over the island and every year there are more foreigners participating.  Gastronomy, sport and diversion for all ages, the highlights of summer.

If you are travelling with the family and book a children’s hotel in Jandia, rent a car and visit some of the theme parks available, such as the Oasis Park La Lajita or the Acua Water Park and some of the interior villages where the kids can enjoy the authentic Canarian atmosphere.

Costa Calma beach: the origin of the Jandia isthmus

Costa Calma is one of the most lovely and famous beaches of the south of Fuerteventura.  It is really special because it marks the origin of the isthmus that forms the Jandia Peninsula, it is a sandy area that belongs to the Pájara municipality, where you can find some of the best beach accommodations in Fuerteventura.

Just when you enter to the Jandia Peninsula, you find this wonderful beach considered by many -native and foreigners- to be the authentic heart of this tourist area of the south of Fuerteventura.  This beach has 1.3 km length and about 60 metres width, and is ideal for family holidays, since, despite being part of the Atlantic, the sea is always calm, without swell and limited depth.

Its excellent services have turned it into a very visited place, especially in high season.  The commercial and restaurants area is worth a visit, as well as a walk, since you can find in the surroundings smaller and very beautiful sand areas where you can peacefully  rest or make a picnic contemplating the sea.

If your hotel is in Jandia beach, next to the Morro Jable town, the Costa Calma beach can be reached in just 20 minutes drive, going across the seaboard, and accompanied during the trip by the incomparable natural park of Jandia.

Pajara, the city with the coastline with the most kilometres in Spain

For many of the foreign tourists who visit it each year (60.6 million in 2013 with a total expense of 59.082 million EUR), Spain is sun and beach. And they are right: the Spanish Peninsula and its islands are authentic havens by the sea of relaxation, being in some parts of its geography practically just that. This is the case of Pajara, in Fuerteventura, the town with more kilometres of coastline in Spain, where everything revolves around the sea, its beaches and the spectacular natural landscapes, almost uninhabited.

Pajara has 170 km of coastline, of which more than 70 are beaches are perfect for swimming, with fine sand, stretched and with shallow waters. Cofete Beach, one of the most famous, located on the large natural park of Jandia, is a true spectacle of beauty, although its current’s and tides make it one of the least recommended for bathing especially if traveling with children.

Sol Jandia Hotel

Sol Jandia Hotel

This southern municipality is one that has the most beach hotels in Fuerteventura, being especially notable those located in the resorts of Costa Calma, Jandia and Morro Jable. More specifically, the hotels in Jandia beach are the most desired because they offer a privileged location, just steps from everything, but with the peace of mind of being in a more natural areas of Fuerteventura beach.

Book a hotel in one of the southern beaches of Fuerteventura is a guarantee of sun and relaxation, but also gives you the opportunity to know the interesting culture of this area of the island, where the sea spirit of the people is mixed with the tourism boom that it has experienced in recent years.

Pajara retains its traditional charm, its traditional festivals and gastronomy, very much based on seafood: in some of the restaurants that one can find on the frontline promenade of Morro Jable, it is possible to taste delicious and amazing dishes, not only for its preparation but for the excellent quality of the raw materials with which they are prepared.

Towns like La Lajita, La Pared o Ajui are worth a visit, as they offer a clear image of what was and what is Fuerteventura today. It’s small streets, caves and natural sights, its people, its traditional taverns, the pleasant atmosphere of the evening when the sun goes down, the music …

Pajara is a place to get lost in its coast, but also it is a place to discover inland, and discover its true essence. An ideal place for family holidays, and an escapade to a beach destination.
